The World Cup in the mind of a student!

While visiting Nairobi two weeks ago, I learnt that students at Thika Primary School for the Blind love soccer very much. Everytime I went into the computer lab there was always a student reading articles on Soccer on the internet...The students are well informed and very competitive especially because World Cup is around the corner. I thought this is a good opportunity for us to provide a platform for the students to share their views with the world.

Many people ask how do the blind or the visually impaired people relate to soccer?

  12. Hello, I am Gillo a friend of Kirika Mugo and Irene Mugo of My Reading Spaces.
Worldcup to me is like Religion. I look foward to this every 4yrs. My favorite team is Brasil, but I am African first Brasilian second. I love the Brasilian samba kings, and I was enticed by their 1982 team of Tele Santana, Captained by the great Dr. Socrates. Always loved their style of play and even though they don't have the flair of past Brasilian teams, they are still a joy to watch.
I hope all the kids at Thika school of the Blind get to enjoy the fun and festivities that will come with Africa's first Worldcup.

  14. In Kenya, Thika primary school for the visually impaired is the football champs in all the visually impaired schools. In the last National games that was hosted by Thika school for the blind on 4th-10th April 2010.
They won the trophy by laying to rest St. Francis integrated school from Rift Valley Province, scoring 2-0.

  19. Hey guys,
As the world awaits for the biggest official opening ceremony of the world cup 2010, to be held on Thursday 10th 2010 i.e just one day to go.
The Continent of Africa has all the pleasure, besides hosting the world cup in South Africa, The African hero and also the former President of South Africa Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela will finally have another historical moment in his life to flag off the world cup, in other words he will be the guest of honor in the ceremony.
Nelson Mandela is known for his fighting for freedom in South Africa, he spent 27 years in isolation as a prisoner and then when released became the president of South Africa.
He is known for his great quote:EDUCATION IS THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON WHICH YOU CAN USE TO CHANGE THE WORLD.
We as Thika primary school for the blind join hands to say, congrats Nelson Mandela.

  22. Football is the best game which I like to play. It is the game which many people like. In the field must be played by 22 players, 11 on each side. In the field we must have a referee whose work is to control that match. Every side must have 1goalkeeper 3 defenders 4 middle fielders and 3 strikers.
Penalty is the punishment which a referee issues when somebody plays rough game.

  23. We have many cups like that of Africa cup of nation which took place in Angola.
And now we have another one in South Africa from June up to thirty one.
The one who do bad in the game must be punished with a free kick.
If it is in the box referee must give out the penalty.
If it is not he must be given a yellow card and if he repeat referee must give him red and he get out of the game.
If the player has been given a red card the coach can not be able to replace with another one.
It will remain ten players while they are eleven in the other team.
There is nobody who is supposed to touch the ball it is bad.

  24. I have been waiting the world cup for a long time, but this is the time. There will be many teams in South Africa
I know many things about it. These are: it is liked by many people, and they enjoy seeing how it is played. I also know that is controlled by the referees.
And other thing I know is that, when the goalkeeper is injured, the referee should add more minutes.
I also know that if the player is given a red card he should not play two or three matches. And when a player has misbehaved a referee has a right to give him a free kick
And if it is in the box he should be given a penalty kick.
The head of soccer in the world is the chairman of fifa. And a person who trains the football club is a coach.
I am sure that my team will beat hard teams such as Brazil, Italy, Nigeria, France and Argentina.

  25. This is Christine from Thika school for the blind lovers of football. Finally the day is here with us. To the african teams, do your best though will miss the services of Drogda. Once more thanks to you Eric, all friends and supporters of Thika school for the blind through Irene and Our Reading Spaces. Through the comments, you have found out that blind students adore football.
As blind person how do I visualize the football game? Sight plays a big role in helping one to enjoy a certain activity. Football to a mind of a blind person is just an instinct the provokes our mind leading to enjoyment and excitment. The fact that the ball hits somewhere and after screams and shouts of celebrations keeps us following the game. As we interact with the rest of the people who give explanations here and there and how the game moves on makes it even more interesting and builds in us the spirit to love the game even more. Infact we feel as if playing as if we are playing. To we blind lovers of this game, football is real and enjoyable. Thanks to all who make it to take us through the game by announcing for it keeps us following the game thus loving it.
To maximize our enjoyment of football, it is good to experience the Football 5-a-side
