Why should the blind and the visually impaired be equipped with IT skills and knowledge?"

As we work so hard to make inABLE a success , we come across many people who have no idea what a blind person can do with technology. People ask many questions, completely unsure of how a blind or visually impaired person can use a computer.

Our goal is to set up computer labs in the eight schools for the blind in Kenya and other countries within the African continent

The truth is, we are powering posibilites and the possibilities are limitless with the power of technology.

  1. As we all know that the world is permanently changing in terms of technology, that shows clearly that IT skills has become a basic requirement regardless of our conditions. Therefore every person must equip him/herself with the rules. Its the same principle that applies in a foot ball game"when you are losing the game, then change the rules" Employers are looking for people with at least a basic skill in IT.
Thanks for inABLE for bringing this endless and limitless opportunity for our Visually Impaired colleagues to make ends meet.

  2. Its not just about employment, its about being at per with the rest.If we are going to change the world's perspective about people with disability then we have to go beyond words and let our action speak for us.The visually impaired person has to be empowered with computer skills to pull him up to the top of the ladder rather than leaving him on the ground of ignorance. This way, they will not only kill inferiority when in the midst of those without disability but will also have the opportunity to interact freely in this global world. We have seen the visually impaired persons making great exploits in other fields.Their intelligence is evident, their progress is evident..and IT is and will be a walkover for them.

  3. The world has moved into another level where the emergence of rapid technology becomes the order of the day. To come into consensus that the blind and the visually impaired should be empowered through reading, they should never be left behind but to move with the growing e-world and be the same as the sighted individuals. They should be completely equipped with IT skills and knowledge for their potentiality to override their disability myth/proverb.This will show the world that 'disability is not inability'
For sure 'But limit is not in the series in which it is a limit.

  4. The dynamic world needs dynamic and creative phase for every individual no matter the case, the point forward to make it more and much more easier for the visually impaired individual nowadays depends heavily on IT sector of which its a revolving field covering different dimensions of life.

IT knowledge is vital in that it will enable these people for instance acquire self independence skills of which are very much important in the outside market for one to get a job.To me IT gives the spotlight and acts like "the eye opener the VI".thanks

  5. The ability to access information and to communicate through computers and the internet at any level ought to be fundamental human and civil right. Information needs of a Blind or visually impaired persons are much more as compared to those of other people in the community especially in matters concerning "health and income" and "finance".
The essence of information Technology needs to visually impaired persons can be looked at in the following perspective:-

    • Blind and visually impaired people work in virtually every sector of our economy.
    • The rate of blindness and severe visual impairment increases sharply with age
This implies that almost everyone is vulnerable to blindness or visual impairement at one moment in our lifetime. So for equality for all to be realized in a community, accessibility to information in any media should be a basic necessity.
    • Blind and visually impaired people are as likely as the general population to use computers and the Internet
Nevertheless, Information/knowledge is power. The ability to obtain and use information about any subject gives a person the opportunity to choose a path from many alternatives instead of being limited to a few perhaps unwanted or unfeasible choices (Fullmer & Majumder, 1991, p. 17).

  6. Has one writer once said that everyone is equal despite of their physical status. That should apply to learn. visual impaired being an example should not be left out. They are also equal to other and have the ability to learn in whatever field. Most people had ignored the fact that the visual impaired can also learn and use computer. Thank to inABLE for making this possible.

  10. "...IT gives the spotlight and acts like an eye opener to the VI persons"
An eye opener to what's taking place around them. They nolonger need to be dependant on others for information, they can access it via internet...on their own-self independence!

  11. ......As the world is growing into a smaller global village through information technology(IT), it is therefor, a calling that every person should be equiped with the basic skills and knowlege of IT whereby persons with visual impairment should not be an exceptional as they form part of the global village. Personally, being in the field for the V.I have come to learn that what we, who are sighted can do, they can even do it better given chance and opportunity to do so.again i can say that as we say that every individual is entitled the right to education and nowadays most studies are taken through the use of IT e.g distant learning, so we need to equip them with these skills and knowledge so as not to dis-include them from this progrmmes.
"THE SKY SHOULD BE THE LIMIT TO THE V.I"

  13. disability is not inability its a very encouraging and positive step by Ourreading space foudation to provide the vi with IT skills because it will help them discover and utilise their great potentials which are brought by technology hence boosting their spirits in nation building just like the normal people in the society..

  14. The visually impaired being equipped with the IT skills is really an eye opener to many.It will enable them to venture into the world and do more and even great than what a sighted person can do.living in dark world is really challenging but through IT skills will enable somebody to enter into a sighted world indirectly.

This skills will also reduce inferiority complex in that people will be able to accept themselves and see that they can do what others can do;and this fact will come to reality that disability is not inability

Will also open doors for jobs;in the fact that a blind person can be able to do data entry, can do front office duties and many more.

this is acting as a base to the visually impaired to enable them come to the real world of today that is changing digitally and will enable them walk together with the rest of the people in the world rather than doing what they are used to "Braille" and this will really create a new world for them.
Thanks to inable for the step they took for the VI they have really created a new world to the visually impaired long live inable
